UPSC Geo Scientist Recruitment 2027
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Combined Geo Scientist Examination 2027 notification for recruitment to various Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and Hydrogeology-related posts under the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). UPSC Geo Scientist 2027 Important Dates
Candidates should keep the following dates in mind:

UPSC Geo Scientist Eligibility 2027
Age Limit
Candidates must have attained 21 years and must not have attained 32 years as on January 1, 2027.
In terms of date of birth, candidates should have been born:
Not earlier than January 2, 1995 and not later than January 1, 2006.
Age relaxation is available for eligible categories as per UPSC rules. SC/ST candidates are eligible for up to 5 years of relaxation, while eligible OBC candidates can get up to 3 years. Other relaxations are available for specified government servants, ex-servicemen and PwBD candidates.
Educational Qualification
The required qualification differs according to the post.
Geologist: Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Geological Science, Geology, Applied Geology, Geo-Exploration, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Marine Geology, Earth Science and Resource Management, Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies, Petroleum Geosciences or Geochemistry.
Geophysicist/Scientist B (Geophysics): M.Sc. in Physics, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Exploration Geophysics, Applied Geophysics, Marine Geophysics or specified equivalent qualifications.
Chemist/Scientist B (Chemical): M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.
Scientist B (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologist: Master’s degree in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology or Hydrogeology.
The notification also prescribes specific Master’s-level qualifications for Assistant Geologist, Assistant Chemist and Assistant Geophysicist posts.
Candidates who have appeared for a qualifying examination and are awaiting the result may also apply in certain circumstances, subject to the conditions specified by UPSC.
UPSC Geo Scientist Application Fee
The application fee is ₹200.
However, Female, SC, ST and eligible Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) candidates are exempted from paying the examination fee. OBC and EWS candidates are not exempted and must pay the prescribed fee.
The fee can be paid through the prescribed online payment modes, including net banking, credit/debit card and UPI.
How to Apply for UPSC Geo Scientist Recruitment 2027
Candidates have to apply online only through the UPSC online application portal.
The new application process consists of the following stages:
- Create an account on the UPSC Online Application Portal.
- Complete the Universal Registration Number (URN) process.
- Fill in the Common Application Form (CAF).
- Complete the examination-specific application form.
- Upload the required documents and photograph.
- Capture the required live photograph.
- Upload the signature as prescribed.
- Select the examination centre and other required details.
- Pay the application fee, if applicable.
- Submit the application and retain the application details for future reference.
The notification states that candidates must provide the required information and supporting documents through the URN, CAF and examination-specific module.
Candidates should also note that the application cannot be withdrawn after submission, and corrections or modifications in the submitted application are not permitted.
UPSC Geo Scientist Exam Pattern 2027
The examination is conducted in three stages:
- Preliminary Examination
- Main Examination

The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective papers for each stream and carries 400 marks. Marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are counted for final merit.

There is negative marking in the objective papers. One-third of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for an incorrect answer, while no penalty is imposed for leaving a question unanswered.
Main Examination
The Main Examination is a conventional/descriptive examination carrying 600 marks.
For the Geology, Geophysics and Chemistry streams, candidates have three papers of 200 marks each, with each paper carrying a duration of three hours. For the Hydrogeology stream, the papers are Geology, Geology and Hydrogeology.
Personality Test
Candidates who qualify in the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test/Interview, which carries 200 marks. The Preliminary and Main Examination marks are counted towards final merit.
