Telangana Electric Auto Scheme 2026

The Telangana government has approved the Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme-2026, a ₹200 crore initiative aimed at converting eligible petrol and diesel auto-rickshaws in the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) area into electric vehicles.

Under the scheme, eligible auto-rickshaw owners can either convert their existing petrol or diesel auto into an electric vehicle or surrender the existing auto and purchase a new factory-made electric auto. Financial assistance of up to ₹1.50 lakh per vehicle has been proposed under the scheme.

The scheme is intended to reduce pollution in Hyderabad, promote cleaner public transport, and reduce the fuel-cost burden on auto-rickshaw drivers. It is being developed in line with the Telangana Rising Vision-2047.

Important: The scheme has received Cabinet approval, but the detailed implementation and application process is still being worked out. Auto drivers should not assume that applications are currently open. A dedicated process and further guidelines are expected from the government.

What is Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme 2026?

The Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme-2026 is designed to replace eligible internal-combustion-engine gradually (ICE) auto-rickshaws with electric vehicles.

The government wants to encourage auto owners to move away from petrol and diesel vehicles while reducing fuel expenses for drivers and improving air quality in Hyderabad. The Cabinet has approved the scheme as part of the state’s broader clean and sustainable transport plans.

How Much Subsidy Will Auto Drivers Get?

Eligible beneficiaries can receive financial assistance of up to ₹1.50 lakh per auto.

However, the assistance works differently depending on which option the vehicle owner chooses.

Option 1: Convert Existing Auto to Electric

Under the first option, an owner can retain the existing auto-rickshaw chassis and convert the petrol or diesel vehicle into an electric vehicle. The conversion must use an AIS-123-approved electric conversion kit installed by an empanelled vendor.

For this option, the government will provide:

  • Up to ₹1.50 lakh or the actual retrofit cost, whichever is lower.

The assistance is intended to cover the cost of the conversion kit, installation, and standard fitment equipment.

Fixed or Swappable Battery Options

The proposed scheme allows beneficiaries to choose between:

  • A fixed battery system
  • A removable/swappable battery system

The conversion kits are expected to be installed through vendors empanelled under the scheme.

Option 2: Surrender Old Auto and Buy New Electric Auto

Auto owners who do not want to retrofit their existing vehicle can choose the second option.

Under this option, the existing petrol or diesel auto must be surrendered and the beneficiary can purchase a new factory-manufactured, type-approved electric passenger three-wheeler.

The government proposes a fixed ₹1.50 lakh subsidy for the new electric auto. The vehicle must meet the specified L5M type-approval requirement.

How Will the New EV Subsidy Be Given?

Under the proposed implementation mechanism, an empanelled dealer would deduct the ₹1.50 lakh subsidy from the final on-road price of the selected electric auto before delivering it to the beneficiary.

This means the beneficiary would not necessarily have to pay the full vehicle price first and then wait for reimbursement.

Who Can Benefit From the Scheme?

The scheme is intended for eligible owners of petrol and diesel auto-rickshaws operating in the CURE region.

The government has stated that the assistance is intended to apply irrespective of the owner’s social category, subject to the scheme’s eligibility conditions.

However, the detailed eligibility criteria, required documents, vehicle conditions and application procedure are still to be formally notified. Therefore, auto drivers should wait for the official implementation guidelines before assuming that they are eligible.

Which Autos Are Targeted?

The scheme is aimed at eligible ICE auto-rickshaws with valid registrations in the CURE region.

The current government data identifies:

Type of AutoNumber
Diesel Autos11,254
Petrol Autos7,512
